UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

A ‘hands-on’ approach to the Jolly Grammar One Program - Saturday November 4th, 9:30-12:30pm

This new program contains 36 ‘hands-on’ lessons that support the JG1 program. The lessons utilise the School Start Spelling Case, which opens up to reveal magnetic letters, prefix and suffix blocks, whiteboard marker, eraser and 2 whiteboards.  The benefits of the program are:

  • Children learn to use a range of strategies to spell words correctly.
    • Everyone is involved in the lessons. Since every child has their own case and is following the teacher’s instructions, every child participates in the learning.
    • Finding magnetic letters and making words is more efficient because they are clearly displayed on one of the whiteboards.
  • Children develop good listening skills.
  • It is ‘hands-on’ visual learning that promotes discussion and discovery about words.
  • Children who have poor handwriting skills and don’t enjoy writing can develop foundational literacy skills.
  • Children develop sorting and organisational skills.

Everyone who attends the workshop has the option to receive discounted prices on a class set of School Start Buddy Cases or School Start Spelling Cases.

“Having seen a presentation by Sharona about the School Start Buddy, our Parents and Friends decided that this would be a perfect gift for new families that come into our school. The response from the students and parents has been extremely positive. Parents have commented on how much their child wants to use their new ‘buddy’ and how eager they are to explore the letters and sounds in the School Start Buddy. It is a perfect way for kids to begin to explore and develop early Literacy skills at home. The information and training involved on the web is also great for parents that may be unsure of how to use the buddy effectively and provides explicit but simple instructions about how to support their child in this exploration. We will be back for more!”

James Quigley

Principal, St Mary Mackillop School, Wallaroo

“I love all of it! I love learning the letters and making funny sentences.”

Piper Montgomery

5 year old girl

“The School Start Buddy, developed by Sharona Edwards, has become a fundamental resource in the explicit teaching of literacy at St Albert’s Catholic School. Used in partnership with all families in the junior years, the School Start Buddy has re-defined the learning experience and delivered results beyond our expectations. Our parents have commented that their children love doing ‘school buddy homework’ and find the resource to be engaging and fun. The resource is especially beneficial for those who response well to tactile and visual learning stimuli.  The School Start Buddy has become a permanent feature of the literacy landscape at St Albert’s School.”
Brett Czechowski

Principal, St Albert's Catholic School, Loxton

“I love playing with my ‘toy’ homework!”

Campbell Vowels

6 year old boy

“You can put words together and make words yourself. It is a fun way to learn and it has helped me figure out new words and sounds. You can draw in it and practice the alphabet.”

Chloe Seaman

5 year old girl

“The School Start Buddy has helped my students who have poor fine-motor skills and are reluctant to write. The magnetic resources allow them to develop their letter recognition and early reading and writing skills without having the barrier of actually writing. When we do writing tasks, they are much more willing to ‘have-a-go’ on the whiteboard because they are able to quickly erase any errors they make.”

Alison Uren

R/1 Teacher, St Albert’s Catholic School, Loxton

“School Start Buddy is brilliant. It has been a fantastic resource in helping my sons build the foundational skills in both reading and writing. My sons love the engaging and interactive activities and I love the quality time I get to spend with my boys, watching them grow and learn.”

Rosie Perre

R/1 teacher and parent of three boys aged 5, 7, and 9

“It has made homework a fun activity that has engaged our school-aged daughter, and also her younger sister who has been practicing her “writing.” It neatly packs away after each use which I appreciate, and I know it is ready for immediate use again next time. We have had fun creating new ways to learn words, sounds and sentences.”

Lynley Seaman

Parent of three girls aged 7, 5 and 3

“My boys love the hands-on approach of using magnetic letters to learn their weekly list of spelling words. I love the design of the case – it is easy for them to find the letters as they are clearly displayed.”

Katie Eatts

Parent of three boys aged 2, 5 and 7
